A wonderful antique Scottish brooch from the mid-Victorian era, c1868! Made of sterling silver, the brooch bears the rare 'Kitemark' to the back giving us the date the design was registered in Britian; 29th May, year 1868. The unique cross design depicts the Latin cross fleury with fleur-de-lis ends and Celtic connotations.
A vibrant array of Scottish-mined agates decorate the front of the cross. The natural hardstones include greyish white/blue banded Montrose agate, forest green bloodstone, and an array of Burn Anne jaspagates. The ends and centre agate inlays are hand cut in dome and cabochon form, and surrounding agates are cut in flat form - the different agate profiles and shapes adding further dimension and artistry. A hand engraved pattern decorates the remaining of the front silver surface, giving further Victorian charm and detail. To the back there is a pin and c-connection, as well as a safety chain loop, which could be utilized today as a ring for wear as a pendant, if desired.
The brooch measures 6cm side to side.

The condition of the brooch is very good. Besides normal surface wear, and a chip to one end of the reddish agate, the brooch presents in fabulous condition for its 150+ year age! All stone inlays appear secure, and the clasp works well with good tension. The piece retains a darkened patina to the front surface adding further antiquity character. A spectacular antique piece! |
