This vesta case was used in the early 1900's as a pocket match safe, and has a match 'striker' placed at the bottom. The front and back of this vesta case features beautiful hand engraving of ivy leaves, one side features a monogrammed shield cartouche - the very elaborate script initials are difficult to ascertain. The lid is correctly aligned and opens and shuts well - there is some slight movement when the lid is opened, however does not hinder the opening & closing. The overall condition of this antique treasure is excellent with no dents, nor damage.
The hallmarks placed along the opening rim indicate this vesta case comes from England, Birmingham and was crafted in 1900 (119 years old!), the maker's initials "S.M.L" is that of Samuel M Levi of once Frederick Street & Vyse Street, Birmingham
A beautiful work of art in itself and today could be used for practicality, such as keeping your matches dry for camping/hiking, pillbox, storing small keepsakes, or perhaps to add to your Objet d'Art collection.
