A unique antique nugget brooch from the late 19th to early 20th century. Made of 9ct yellow gold, the brooch features a beautiful natural gold nugget specimen as the central feature. The natural gold nugget sits firmly and is slightly recessed into the bar. Typically referred to as goldfield nuggets, this antique piece was likely produced in the Australian Great Gold Rush eras between the mid to late 19th century discoveries. Under magnification the gold nugget features tiny quartz crystals and other interesting minerals in the cavities, indicative of the natural nature of the nugget. The striking and unusual shaped nugget specimen measures 17.50mm x 10.00mm (widest point). A metal pin and c-loop attaches to the back. Stamped "9CT" to the back of the bar.

The knife-edge beveled bar is reminiscent of early Australian designs, and similar pictures of the refined design can be seen in the "Australian Jewellers Gold & Silversmiths Makers & Marks" book (pg22). Many nugget brooches were produced between circa 1860 to 1915 following significant Australian gold discoveries in the nineteenth and very early twentieth centuries.

A collectible piece of Australian history which embellishes the story of the Australian gold discoveries!
