A wonderful Scottish pebble brooch dating back to the Victorian era, circa 1880! Handmade of sterling silver, the circular design features a central shield motif and Scottish Saltire cross, surmounted by a royal crown. Beautiful rich reddish hued with yellow patterning jasper segments decorate sections of the border, cross and lower tab. A striking bluish grey Montrose agate slice accents the shield, whilst green bloodstone segments decorate the remaining of the cross and border. The quality hardstone is native to Scotland's mountains and rugged coastline deposits in the 19th century! There is a lovely textured silver surface and engraving to the crown, adding further charm and detail to this bonnie antique piece!
A polished reverse with pin and 'C' clasp attaches to the back. No hallmarks are sighted to the piece, typical of the era and origin, a test indicates sterling silver.
Scottish agate jewellery was made popular again in the nineteenth century due to Queen Victoria adorning Scottish jewellery and her frequent visits to her Scottish Castle Balmoral. For more information on Antique Scottish Jewellery head to the blog - Antique Scottish Jewellery
